The Cougar baseball team stopped an eight-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader against Northwestern College.
Game 1
In game 1, junior
Thomas Fox got his first start of the season and responded well, going three tough innings before handing the game to
Kyle Blair who pitched four innings to earn the win.
Catcher
Mike McGill led the offense with four RBIs, three of those coming on a home run in the third inning to give the Cougars an early lead.
The Cougars led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Eagles rallied for five runs. Northwestern loaded the bases on Fox who was replaced by Blair. Blair struck out the next batter, but a string of singles would clear the bases and bring home another two.
UMM went back on top in the top of the sixth inning. Third baseman
Josh Ledin led off with a walk, followed by a
Jordan Gegen double, moving Ledin to third. McGill hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ledin. Bacon singled home Gegen two batters later. With left fielder
Chris Thompson on third and Bacon on second, right fielder
Drew Lundquist doubled through the left side to score both runs. Suddenly, after five and half innings, the Cougars were back up 8-6.
Northwestern would take back a run in the bottom of the sixth, but get no closer.
The game was the Cougars first UMAC win this season.
Gegen went 4 for 4 in the game.
Game 2
Two home runs from catcher
Sean Mooney-Leber and runs in six of seven innings paced UMM to a 13-10 win in the nightcap.
Mooney blasted solo shots in the fourth and fifth innings. Ledin also homered in the third inning, a three-run clear that put the Cougars in front 6-2.
Senior
Nik Randall went the complete game, giving up six earned runs while walking only one batter.
Northwestern was its own enemy, committing five errors, several of those in innings 2-4 when the Cougars scored nine runs.
UMM led 13-6 going in to the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles managed to score four runs to narrow the gap, but drew no closer.
The Cougars improved to 3-15 on the season.
Every starter in the game reached base at least once.
UMM plays Tuesday, on the road at Presentation College.
