After dropping game 1 to North Central, the Cougars rallied from six runs down (including three in the ninth) to win game 2 in thrilling fashion, 11-10.
Game 1 Box
In game 1, the Cougars were able to generate some offense early, but ultimately unable to solve NCU's sidewinding Matt Huberty who scattered seven hits over a complete game victory.
Cougar attempts to rally were also complicated by poor defense. UMM committed six errors in the game.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, shortstop
Matt Peterson led off with a double, followed by a single from second baseman
Ian Olson. A fielder's choice from pitcher
Nik Randall got Olson out at second but scored Peterson from third. Randall would score later in the inning on a single from first baseman
Jordan Gegen.
But in the top of the fifth, the Rams would answer with four runs on just two hits, thanks to UMM errors. Leading 6-3 now, NCU added insurance runs in the sixth.
Randall took the loss, going 4.2 innings. He was relieved by junior
Kyle Blair who finished out the game.
Game 2 Box
A bases-loaded walk to Gegen with no outs in the bottom of the seventh capped a five-run comeback for the Cougars in game 2.
UMM trailed the whole game and went into the seventh behind 10-8. The Cougars led off the inning with a single from senior left fielder
Scott Barta. Randall, pinch-hitting for
Chris Thompson, followed with a double to right center, moving Barta to third. Then leadoff man,
Nick Bacon, cleared the bases with a triple to left center. The Rams intentionally walked Peterson and Olson hoping for an easy force play, but NCU relief pitcher Keaton Larrabee walked Gegen, ending the game.
Sophomore
Ted Gray picked up the win in relief, replacing junior starter Tom Fox in the fifth inning.
Bacon, Gegen and sophomore
Ben Schwarz (playing DH) led UMM with 2 RBIs a piece.
