Box Score

Ashland, Wis. – A goal from Zoe Bergstrom (Westminster, Colo.) in the first minute of the second overtime pushed the Minnesota Morris women's soccer team past a pesky Northland team today (Oct. 15) in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.

Just 55 seconds into the second overtime, Bergstrom got into the open field on a breakaway and scored on the period's only shot. It's her second goal of the year and first game-winner.

Morris (7-5-0, 5-2-0 UMAC) had to work extra hard for the win today, after pounding Northland (4-9-0, 1-7-0 UMAC) 7-1 in their previous meeting this season. Winning in Ashland has proved to be tough out for the Cougars, though, as they lost 2-0 there last season.

The first half nearly went without a score, until the Cougars' Ally Heida (Coon Rapids, Minn.) got them on the board with a penalty kick at the 42:57 mark. Morris took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Northland didn't wait long to tie it up in the second half.

Just over 10 minutes in, the LumberJills' Rebecca Lake pulled the game even, scoring an unassisted tally.

Despite outshooting the LumberJills 13-to-8 in regulation – including a 6-to-2 mark in the second half – the Cougars were forced to take the field for their third overtime game of the season. The Cougars were 0-2 in overtime heading into the day, with the last trip coming as a 1-0 loss to St. Scholastica on Sept. 23.

Bergstrom and Megan Laird each led the way with three shots, with Bergstrom putting a game high three on goal.

The Cougars put up 16 shots as a team, holding the LumberJills to just nine.

Morris has now scored multiple goals in their last four UMAC games, winning each. They will be tested tomorrow though, as they finish the weekend at St. Scholastica, a team they have lost one-goal games to in each of their past four meetings.

The Cougars and Saints kick it off at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow.
