Morris, Minn. – For the second time this season against Northwestern, the Minnesota Morris women's soccer team drops a one-goal heartbreaker, falling 1-0 today (Oct. 20).

In a game where the Cougars controlled much of the possession and made their chances, a fluky Eagle corner kick late in the second half became the difference.

Northwestern (10-4-1, 8-1-1 UMAC) lined up one of their just three corners in game, with less than 12 minutes left in a scoreless match. The serve made it through the group of players in front of the net and bounced off the inside of the far post before landing just past the goal line for the game's only score.

The players initially reacted to continue the play, including Cougar goalkeeper RiAnne Metz who dove for the loose ball, before the official whistled to stop play on the goal.

Morris (7-6-1, 5-3-1 UMAC) fired off four corners of their own in the match, along with eight total shots, compared to nine from Northwestern.  The Cougars also lost a 3-2 game to the Eagles earlier this season, with the winning goal coming in the final minute of regulation.

The Cougars held a 5-to-3 edge in shots in the first half, including a run of three straight, along with two corner kicks over a five-minute span near the 20th minute of play.

Rachel Berns led the Cougars with three shots – the most she's posted since Oct. 1, while Metz finished with three saves.

With just three games left and in third place in the league standings, the loss leaves the Cougars likely on the outside looking when it comes to hosting a first round UMAC Tournament game. Morris cannot move ahead of first place Northwestern, and second place St. Scholastica needs to win just one of their remaining four games to secure a top-two spot.

The Cougars will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Oct. 22, when they host Crown at 12:00 p.m., back on Cougar Field.
