Morris, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris women's soccer team locked up their best finished since the 2007 season on Oct. 29, with their 2-0 win over visiting Bethany Lutheran.

Morris' (10-6-1, 8-3-1 UMAC) win, coupled with a Northwestern loss to St. Scholastica, moved the Cougars into a tie for second place in the final Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings. The Cougars last finished in second four years ago, and move up two spots from their fourth place finish last season.

Bethany Lutheran (8-7-3, 4-5-3 UMAC) held the Cougars off the board for the first 45:00 minutes, turning away 13 UMM shots in the first half.

In the second, the Cougars finally broke through, with Meghan Laird finishing off a breakaway that had just enough to roll in past the keeper at the 56:57 mark.

Now in control with a one goal lead, Leah Parker added the insurance, taking things into her own hands on a 50-yard breakaway down the middle of the field. Parker shedded off the last defender once inside the box and beat the keeper for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

In control much of the day, the Cougars took 24 total shots, while limiting Bethany Lutheran to just three in the match.

With 10 wins, the Cougars get back to double digits after just eight last season, reaching the mark for the fourth time in six years under Dan Magner.

Losing the tie-breaker with a pair of one-goal losses to Northwestern in the regular season, the Cougars will go on the road in first round of the UMAC Playoffs.

The semifinal round is set for Tuesday afternoon.
