Ashland, Wis. – The Minnesota Morris baseball team charted their first doubleheader sweep of the season on Apr. 22, winning 7-5 and 2-0 over host Northland in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.

The Cougars (7-12, 6-3 UMAC) have now won three straight, with a chance for the series sweep on Apr. 23 when they take on the LumberJacks (3-18, 1-12 UMAC) in one nine-inning game in the series finale.

Heading into Saturday, the Cougars sit in third place in the UMAC standings, and are just one game back of second-place Bethany Lutheran in the loss column, with a three-game series with the Vikings coming up in Morris in the last weekend of the season.

On Friday, though, the Cougars' scored seven runs on eight hits in the opener while the Morris pitchers scattered 12 LumberJack hits and allowed only five runs to preserve the win. After trailing 5-2 entering the seventh, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the inning to tie the game and force extras.

After a scoreless eighth the Cougars scored twice in the ninth, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a Josh Ledin (Big Lake, Minn.) single for the winning runs.

Lee Arvold (Blaine, Minn.) came in in the seventh and threw three scoreless innings, allowing just four harmless hits while striking out three for his second win of the season.

In game two Nate Haseman (Butterfield, Minn.) went the distance allowing just two hits while striking out seven to win his first game of the year. He was perfect through the first rough four innings, and allowed in only two hits in the fifth.

The Cougars knocked out six hits in the game, led by two from Austin Pinke (St. James, Minn.). Pinke and Drew Lundquist (North Branch, Minn.) each scored in the first, giving Haseman all the insurance he needed.

The two teams will reconvene for game three on Apr. 23, before Morris heads to Martin Luther for a doubleheader on Apr. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
