Mitchell, S.D. – In their first time on the diamond outside the state of Florida, the Minnesota Morris baseball team met up with a powerful Concordia-Moorhead team, dropping the doubleheader by scores of 10-3 and 20-6.
The two teams had to trek to Mitchell, S.D. to find a useable field, and for Morris (1-9), it was their first game in over two weeks. The Cougars were able to shake the rust off and get on the board first in game one. After a scoreless first, Mike McGill (Omaha, Neb.) led off the second with a double, before coming all the way around to score for the early 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Cobbers plated six in the bottom of the second to take a lead they would never relinquish.
The double from McGill was the first of his two in the day, as he and Drew Lundquist (North Branch, Minn.) combined for all four of the Cougars' hits on the game.
Dustin Sauter (Morris, Minn.) walked twice on the day, finishing 0-1 at the plate, bringing to an end his eight-game hitting streak to open the season.
Neil Arvold (Blaine, Minn.) started and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) in taking his second loss of the season.
In the second game, the Cougars' bats livened up to knock out nine hits in their way to six runs, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the red hot Cobbers.
Concordia scored in all but one inning, including five in the third and six in the sixth, while racking up 19 hits on the day.
Lundquist and Ian Olson (Granite Falls, Minn.) led the Cougars with two hits each, with each adding a RBI and scoring once as well. All six Cougar runs were scored by different players, while Jordan Gegen (Anoka, Minn.) was the only Cougar with two RBI.
Nick Perrotte (Aruba) started and only made it through three innings while allowing nine runs (eight earned), and walking three with two strike outs.
The Cougars are scheduled to continue action on Tuesday, Apr. 4, opening UMAC play in hosting Presentation. Stay locked in to UMMCougars.org for any possible cancelations or postponements.
