Mankato, Minn. – After seeing the opening game of its series with Bethany Lutheran suspended by rain, the Minnesota Morris baseball team went baseball team went 11 innings before eventually falling 7-6 on May 5.
The game started on May 4, and went a full nine innings before poor weather forced the postponement until May 5.
The Cougars (6-30, 6-13 UMAC) nearly closed out the win in regulation, taking a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth, with the Vikings (21-15, 14-5 UMAC) needing to rally to avoid the loss. They did just that, getting the three ruins they needed to force the extra innings. And after the evening off, the two teams resumed for the 10th inning.
Jake Johnson started and pitched 8.2 innings for the Cougars taking credit for all of the first six Viking runs, but stuck out five, before being relieved by
Ted Gray with two outs in the ninth. Gray faced one batter and finished the inning, and came back a day later to complete two total innings as the Cougars went into extra innings.
Bethany Lutheran finally scored the winning run in the 11th, using a long fly ball to center to bring home the game-winner.
Jordan Gegen finished 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the team, while
Nick Perrotte also drove in two.
After wrapping up the postponed game, the two teams they reconvened for their regularly scheduled Saturday doubleheader, but just got to the top of the third before being delayed by rain again.
The Vikings held a 4-0 lead over the Cougars before the weather took its toll, and no make-up date has been scheduled. With the UMAC tournament awaiting this weekend, the Cougars have already been eliminated, but The Vikings need to finish the games, as they have the opportunity to move up to second in the final standings.
