Knights Fend Off Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW ULM, Minn. - Playing in their third doubleheader in three days, the Cougars were unable to match up with a Martin Luther team that swung the bats well on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota Morris (2-15, 0-8 UMAC) fell 10-0 and 13-2 on the road. The streak of doubleheaders will continue tomorrow as the Cougars play host to Mayville State at noon in their final home games of the season.

GAME 1

The first game was scoreless through three innings as Derrick Foss looked in control. However, in the bottom of the fourth inning the Knights took advantage of a defensive mistake to push across five runs, all unearned. The Knights would add a run in the fifth and sixth innings to push their lead to seven. A pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth ended the game as they Knights picked up the 10-0 win.

Offensively the Cougars scattered seven hits, two by Eric Terres.

GAME 2

Minnesota Morris struck first in game two, picking up a run in the top of the first. Terress doubled to lead off the game and Jake Schmitz singled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Cody Reinke walked to load the bases, but just momentarily, as Terres got caught trying steal home. Schmitz would score the opening run of the game on a wild pitch but the inning would end two batters later without scoring any more runs.

The lead was short lived because Martin Luther scored five in the bottom half of the first and then exploded for eight more in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 13-1 lead. Schmitz would score again, this time on a Reinke singled in the seventh but it would be all the Cougars could muster as they fell 13-2.
