Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (2-17) fell short in a doubleheader against Mayville State (32-4-1) on Monday. The Comets scored early and often in game one, winning 14-2. The Cougars battled tough in game two, but fell 5-2, after leaving seven runners on base.

GAME 1

Mayville took advantage to early errors by the Cougars defense to take an 11-0 lead after two innings.
Calvin Bowes came in, in relief and did a nice job, shutting the Comets down. He would pitch 3 2/3 innings allowing just three hits and one run.

Offensively the Cougars had trouble with the Mayville State starter. Minnesota Morris was held hitless through four and 2/3 innings.
Kylan Hill doubled in the fifth but was stranded on second one batter later. MSU added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to win 14-0.

GAME 2

The Comets picked up a run in the top of the second but the Cougars came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third. With one out Morris had runners on first (
Jake Schmitz) and second (
Devin Waldvogel).
Jason Hodson singled down the line as Waldvogel scored and Schmitz went to third. Hodson would end up on third after the throw home. Schmitz was thrown out at home trying to score on a grounder to first and then Hill grounded out to third to end the inning.

Unfortunately, Mayville responded with four runs in the top of the fourth on three hits and two walks.
Dalton DeGraffenreid scored the Cougars second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch. The Cougars left two runners on in the inning in that inning, missing a chance to inch closer to the Comets. Morris left a runner on in the sixth and seventh as well, as the Cougars were unable to take advantages of their scoring opportunities.

After four straight days, the Cougars are off until Friday when they take on Northland in Ashland, Wisconsin. The season will wrap up on Saturday with a doubleheader against Crown.
