Cougars Dominate in Sweep of Crown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (6-7, 3-0) surpassed last year's win total with a sweep of Crown College (1-13, 0-5 UMAC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars won each game in eight innings, winning game one 14-4 and the second game 11-1. Cody Reinke had four RBI and score four runs on the afternoon to spark the offense.

Crown took advantage of a few Cougar mistakes in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead. Chandler Erickson reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a throwing error to put Morris on the board in the bottom of the second. The Storm got that run back in the top of inning number three, taking advantage of a leadoff walk. However, Minnesota Morris would take control of the game over the next two at-bats.

Three runs would cross home plate in the bottom of the third to tie the game up. Jake Schmitz, Reinke and Christian Korlath each had an RBI in the inning, as the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs. In the bottom of the fourth UMM took the lead, scoring four runs with two out. Donnie Mavencamp tripled to start the two out rally from the nine spot in the lineup. Eric Terres drove him home with a double. Reinke drove in Terres with an infield single. Kylan Hill singled to score both Schmitz, who had reached via a walk, and Reike.

Morris added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks in large part to a two run single off the bat of Korlath. In the eighth inning the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs and drew a pair of walks to put the game away. Kyle Grote had a single to drive in Erickson giving Minnesota Morris the 14-4 win.

The Strom again struck first in game number two, scoring a first inning run off starter Joey Hyde. It would end up being the only run Hyde would allow, finishing the game after seven strong innings, striking out five and allowing just four hits. He never pitched from behind again after the first inning because the Cougars scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

Terres singled to start the inning and scored on a groundout. Reinke then tripled with one out and also scored on a groundout. In the bottom of the third back to back singles started the inning and Reinke came up with runners on second and third. He would come through with a double to left center driving in Schmitz and Terres. Kylan Hill also scored in the inning giving Morris a 5-1 lead.

Scott Peterson singled and scored on a Schmitz double, giving the Cougars a 6-1 lead. Four runners crossed the plate in the seventh inning as the Cougars busted the game open. Grote came through with a two RBI double in the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth Minnesota Morris batters drew three walks and had a batter hit by a pitch giving them a run and clinching the 11-1 victory.

This weekend the Cougars travel to Northwestern for a three game series. It will be their first true road trip of the season.
