Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer team continued their winning ways today (Oct. 16), notching a 6-0 win over Northland at Cougar Field.

Six different players found the net, including the first career game-winner from Matt Bennis (Deephaven, Minn.) under 12 minutes into the match. After a point-blank shot from Greg Borchers (Westminster, Colo.) was stopped by the LumberJack keeper, Bennis was there to clean up and tap the ball in for the early 1-0 lead.

Minnesota, Morris (8-3-3, 7-1-1 UMAC) extends their winning streak to six straight, and stays unbeaten in their last seven. The Cougars outshot the Jacks 26-to-3, while landing an amazing 23 shots on goal.

Northland (1-12, 0-9-0 UMAC) was paced by goalkeeper Matt Larsen who made 15 saves in the match, limiting the damage.

The Cougars Toby Glaser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored his team-leading seventh goal late in the first half, giving UMM an insurmountable 3-0 lead at halftime. Glaser led all players with six shots in the match, with five of them landing on goal.

The 3-0 lead stood for 20 minutes in the second half, until Matt Vik (St. Paul, Minn.) opened the scoring back up with a goal off a pretty crossing pass from Matt Johnson (Monument, Colo.). Johnson would add a goal of his one just 41 seconds later, and finished with five points in the match adding three total assists to his day.

In a quiet day for the goalkeeper, Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) stopped the only two shots he saw to record his second straight win and third shutout of the season.

The Cougars held an 8-to-0 edge in corners and were flagged for 16 fouls in a physical match that saw 28 combined fouls called.

Seven different players finished with a point for Minnesota, Morris, who will face off with the team that started their current unbeaten streak in St. Scholastica. In a match with major conference title implications, the Cougars and Saints will meet at 12:00 p.m. on Oct. 17.

The Saints are unbeaten in league play, with their only blemish a 0-0 double overtime tie at home to the Cougars on Sept. 25. Now at Cougar Field, UMM has a chance to move into first place and put themselves in position for the top seed in the UMAC Tournament with a win over the Saints.
