New Ulm, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris men's soccer team lost their second straight today (Oct. 29), dropping a 4-3 decision to Martin Luther.
The Cougars lose two straight for the first time all season, letting a 3-2 lead slip away in the process. Minnesota, Morris (9-6-3, 8-4-1) took a 3-2 lead into halftime after a Jeff Lind (Robbinsdale, Minn.) in the 41st minute.
Coming out of the break, the game was scoreless until the final 20 minutes, when the Knights Nathan Gurgel scores the first of his two goals. Gurgel gave Margin Luther (6-10-2, 3-8-2) the tying goal in the 71st minute and the game-winner in the 84th.
Despite being held off the board in the second half, the Cougars outshot the Knights by an 11-to-8 margin, and finished even for the match at 21 apiece. Minnesota, Morris held a large advantage in corner kicks at 9-to-2.
With the loss the Cougars fall into third place in the league standings, two points behind second place Bethany Lutheran. The Vikings and Cougars will now square off tomorrow, with the winner securing a second place finish, and a first round home game in the UMAC Tournament on Nov. 2. The two teams should get comfortable too, as they will meet each other in that first round game.
