Ashland, Wis. – The Minnesota Morris soccer team continued their winning ways today, winning their fourth straight with a 4-0 win over Northland, on the road in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
The Cougars scored three first half goals in a 14-minute span and added another in the second as Morris (7-3-2, 6-1-0 UMAC) posted their second highest scoring game of the year.
Northland (1-13-0, 0-8-0 UMAC) managed just three shots in the game – with none in the second half – as the Cougar defense was impressive as always, allowing just two shots on goal in their seventh shutout of the season.
The Cougars opened the scoring at the 22:34 mark with
Ebrima Badgie's (Banjul, The Gambia) fifth goal of the season, which would stand as the eventual game-winner, his third of the year.
Toby Glaser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Kevin Haider (Monticello, Minn.) added the next two goals, scoring just seconds apart as the Cougars went into halftime holding 3-0 lead. It was Glaser's third goal of the year, moving behind Badgie for second on the team, while Haider nets his first points of the season.
The final goal came off a penalty kick from
Greg Borchers (Westminster, Colo.) in the 79th minute, his second of the season, but just the first PK for the Cougars all season.
With four goals today and seven in their first meeting with the LumberJacks, the Cougars have posted each of their two highest scoring games of the season against Northland. Morris did their damage on 13 total shots, with the defense allowing a season-low-tying three.
Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) stopped the only two shots he saw and record his seventh shutout of the season, setting a new career high while moving closer to the UMM career record of 27 with his 21.
With the win, the Cougars remain just a game back of league leading St. Scholastica, leaving tomorrow's game with the Saints a match-up for first place. The Cougars fell 1-0 to the Saints earlier this season, but tied their rivals last year during the regular season in Duluth.
Kick-off tomorrow is set for 2:00 p.m.
