Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team won for the sixth time in their last seven games, defeating Crown College 3-0 today (Oct. 22).

The Cougar (9-4-2, 8-2-0 UMAC) offense keeps playing at a high level, scoring multiple goals in each of their last four wins. It took a long time for the Cougars to get on the board today against the Storm (7-6-0, 5-5-0 UMAC), but once they did they were able to put three goals on the scoreboard.

After a scoreless first half, Matt Johnson (Monument, Colo.) was able to get his third goal of the season, as he scored quickly in the second. Within the first minute of the second half, Johnson was able to break the 0-0 tie and give the Cougars the lead, scoring on a heavy Morris attack.

Almost twenty minutes later, Matthew Bennis (Deephaven, Minn.) got his first goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0. Bennis took advantage of a loose ball after a scrum in front of the net, punching it in from just about five feet out.
 
Then in the 77th minute of the game, Michael Ward (Cottage Grove, Minn.) added his third goal of the season, sealing the game for the Cougars.

The defense was not to be outshined by the offense today, as the Cougar back line only allowed four shots in the game and gave up no corner kicks. Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) had an easy day, stopping the only shot that made it to the goal for his eighth shutout of the season. Led Scott DeVries (Maple Grove, Minn.), Kevin Haider (Monticello, Minn.) and Dan Stoterau (St. Cloud, Minn.), the defense posted their second game of the season with out a corner allowed, and thier third game with four or fewer shots.

With two games left in the regular season the Cougars sit in second place, two points ahead of third place Northwestern. Morris will be back in action this Wednesday (Oct. 26) against Martin Luther at 2:00 p.m. Last time these two teams met, the Cougars were able to squeeze out a 2-1 win in overtime.
