Morris, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of
Northland today (Apr. 28), hosting the LumberJacks after their series in Ashland, Wis. last weekend was suspended due to weather. When the two teams reconvened today in Morris, the Cougars came away with an 8-5 victory.
Morris (8-12, 7-3 UMAC) won for the fourth straight time, continuing their season long streak. They pounded out 14 hits in the game, their seventh game in double-digits this season. Paced by three second-inning runs, they never trailed as all but one player finished with a hit.
The Cougars were playing as the visitor today, as the game was originally scheduled last weekend to be a LumberJack home game.
Northland (5-20, 1-13 UMAC) finished with seven hits in the game, but in five innings were held hitless. Two of their five runs came in the ninth, after the Cougars had already opened up to an 8-3 lead.
Cougar starter
Jordan Gegen (Anoka, Minn.) threw five strong innings for his first win of the year, allowing just three earned runs on six hits. After his teammates gave him a 3-0 lead after the second, he allowed only single runs in the second, third and fifth.
The Cougars also added runs in third and fifth, before putting the game away with three in the seventh.
Gegen went a long way to help his cause as well, scoring one of those runs while driving in another in a 2-for-4 day. He has now hit safely in seven straight games, with four multiple-hit games in the stretch.
Austin Pinke (St. James, Minn.) and
Ian Olson (Granite Falls, Minn.) each led the way with three hits, with
Nick Perrotte (Aruba) also adding two. Pinke, Perotte and
Kyle Grote (North Branch, Minn.) each finished with two RBI, while Perotte scored a game high two runs.
With one hit,
Drew Lundquist (North Branch, Minn.) extends his team best hitting streak to 12 games, which started with the first game back from the spring trip.
The 14 hits on the day tie a season high done twice this season, most recently against Presentation on Apr. 12. The eight runs are the most since that same game, and stand and the Cougars' third highest output in UMAC play.
Still in third place in the league standings, Morris faces a tall order tomorrow when they host league leading St. Scholastica in a doubleheader, starting at 2:00 p.m. The Saints enter ranked No. 9 in the country with a 23-4 record, which includes a 13-1 mark in league action.
After their Friday twin bill, the Cougars and Saints will play one nine-inning game on Saturday, Apr. 30.
