Morris, Minn. – On a windy day at Cougar Prairie Field – even by Morris standards – the Minnesota Morris baseball team fell twice to St. Scholastica, the No. 9 ranked team in the country. After a close start, the Saints wore down the Cougars for a 7-2 win in the opener, and a 14-0 win in game two of the double-dip.
Logan Orazem (Mora, Minn.) started and pitched brilliantly early in game one, allowing just one unearned run over the first four innings, before St. Scholastica (25-4, 15-1 UMAC) loaded the bases with one out in the fifth.
Orazem eventually suffered the loss, leaving the game down 1-0, but was ultimately responsible for three runs scored on just two hits in 4.1 innings of work. The loss is his first of the season, as he sits at 2-1.
After going down 5-0 in the sixth, Morris (8-13, 7-5 UMAC) got two back in the bottom of the inning to pull within three heading into the final frame.
Jordan Gegen's (Anoka, Minn.) two RBI accounted for each run, as he knocked in
Drew Lundquist (North Branch, Minn.) and
Ian Olson (Granite Falls, Minn.).
The Saints eventually got the two runs back in the top of the seventh and held the Cougars scoreless in the final half inning.
Lee Arvold (Blaine, Minn.) started the second game and pitched a shutout first before the Saints got on the board with one in the second. Errors would be the crux of the Cougars in game two, as five misplays in the field led to 10 unearned runs in the loss.
St. Scholastica scored six each in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game away, also adding 14 hits.
Arvold went 3.2 innings and allowed eight hits and eight runs – only four earned – while striking out four.
Lundquist led the Cougars with two of their eight hits in the game, and along with his one in the first game, has now hit safely in 14 straight games.
The two teams are slated to play a third game tomorrow with the first pitch at 12:00 p.m. However, with poor weather in the forecast, be sure to check out UMMCougars.org for any possible schedule changes.
Next week, Morris heads to Martin Luther for a tripleheader on May 3, before returning home to close out the regular season with a three-game series on against Bethany Lutheran on May 6 & 7.
