Morris Minn. – Getting down to must-win time on the season, the Minnesota Morris baseball team was faced with a tall task today (May 6) with Bethany Lutheran visiting, one of the top teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and the region. Despite out-hitting the Vikings, the Cougars fell 6-2, leaving their hopes of a UMAC Tournament berth hinging on tomorrow's doubleheader.

The Cougars will now have to win at least one of tomorrow's games – and possibly both – to secure a spot in the conference tourney, which kicks off on May 12.

Morris (9-18, 8-9 UMAC) got a great pitching performance from starter Lee Arvold (Blaine, Minn.) who went 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and four runs (three earned) to high powered Bethany. He allowed only single runs in the first and second, before shutting down the Vikings (23-8, 16-2 UMAC) throughout the third, fourth and fifth innings.

The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the fifth to pull the score to 2-1 when Austin Pinke (St. James, Minn.) fired off a shot down the third base line and beat out the double play attempt which allowed Josh Ledin (Big Lake, Minn.) to score.

Arvold would leave after the seventh with seven strikeouts to his credit, but suffered the loss to fall to 2-6 on the season.

The Cougars got another run in the eighth to make the score 5-2 when Nick Perrotte (Aruba) singled home Ian Olson (Granite Falls, Minn.). Olson also added two hits on the day, to finish as the team leader along with Dustin Sauter (Morris, Minn.) and Jordan Gegen (Anoka, Minn.).

All told the Cougars had nine hits on the day to the Vikings eight, only the fourth time this season they have out-hit their opponent and lost.

The Vikings never scored more than once an inning, but slowly put the game away with single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

The Cougars remain in fifth place in the league standings, two game back in the win column of Presentation and Northwestern with identical 10-7 conference records (NWC and PC scores for the day have not been reported).

The Cougars and Vikings will square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader in the season finale, with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
