2011 Scehdule
The Minnesota Morris Men's soccer teams finally gets some game action today (Sept. 1), traveling to Collegeville, Minn. to take on host St. John's at 4:30 p.m.
The same two teams opened the season last year in Morris, squaring off in primetime under the lights on the turf at Big Cat Stadium. Despite a combined 30 shots, and 14 shots on goal between the two teams, the Johnnies and Cougars played to a scoreless
0-0 tie after two overtimes.
The Cougars finished third in the UMAC with an 8-4-2 league mark (10-7-4 overall), and were picked to finish
second in 2011. The Johnnies placed sixth in MIAC action with a 5-3-2 conference record (6-6-4 overall) and were recently picked for an eighth place finish in 2011.
Morris was Saint John's only UMAC opponent last season, leaving them with a 0-0-1 record against their neighboring league. UMM, however, faced four MIAC squads in 2010, tying Macalester as well, but falling to Hamline and St. Thomas, going 0-2-2 against the league.
The Johnnies went 4-4-0 at home in 2010 while the Cougars racked up a 5-4-2 road record. A high scoring Morris squad knocked in 37 goals last season, compared to just 17 from Saint John's. The Johnnies were tough on defense however, only allowing 19 goals, while the Cougar defense saw 22 shots reach the back of the net.
The Cougars have the pleasure of returning their top four scorers from last season, led by
Toby Glaser (Colorado Springs, Colo.)who knocked in nine goals in 2010 on his way to 21 points. Glaser was joined by three teammates as 10-point scorers last season, with all four returning.
The Johnnies, meanwhile, welcome back their top two scorers, led by Michael Coborn with 17, the only Johnnie to score over six points last season.
Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) returns in net for the Cougars, after a junior season where he logged four shutouts in just seven starts, including the opener against the Johnnies where he racked up six saves.
The Johnnies must replace their top goalkeeper, with their only returner putting just 170 minutes between the pipes last season.
A tough non-conference schedule will set up the Cougars well on their quest for the UMAC title, and it all starts today at 4:30 against Saint John's.
