Morris, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris baseball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings, but saw their offense stall out as visiting Northland came all the way back for a 12-6 win today (Apr. 21).
Northland (10-18, 5-8 UMAC) got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but the Cougars came right back with two in the bottom of the inning on a two RBI single from
Mike McGill, with the senior driving in his team-leading 16th and 17th runs of the season.
Morris (4-23, 4-9 UMAC) then extended their lead to 5-1 with a three-run second, including a two-run homerun from
Neil Arvold the first of his career, and the second round-tripper for the Cougars this season.
With starter
Jake Johnson cruising through the first three innings – allowing just three hits – the Cougars added one more in the third on an
Eric Terres RBI single.
Terres led the offense with a 4-for-4 day, his first career four-hit day, moving his season average to .354. Terres also scored twice and drove in one.
He led the Cougars to 12 hits on the day, their third highest total of the season. Eight of the nine Cougars starters finished with at least one hit.
Northland started their comeback with two in the fourth, and tied the game with a three-run fifth. A pair of bases loaded singles in the fifth completed the comeback, fully erasing the Cougars' lead. A five-run sixth by the LumberJacks then gave them a led they wouldn't lose.
Arvold led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and advanced all the way to third before being stranded as Northland worked out of the jam.
At 4-8 in conference play, the Cougars slip three games out of a spot in the UMAC Tournament with just two weeks left two play.
With the poor weather today, the two teams played only the first game of their scheduled doubleheader, and will now play a doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 22) with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
