Duluth, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris offense was held in check today (Apr. 6), as host St. Scholastica swept a doubleheader by scores of 2-0 and 4-0.
In game one, Saint starter Mickie Keuning threw a no-hitter, allowing just three Cougars to reach base, including
Eric Terres who walked twice. In the first inning,
Dustin Sauter also reached on an error, but in all three cases, the runners were stranded.
Keuning struck out eight on the day, as the Cougars (3-13, 3-3 UMAC) squandered another quality pitching performance from
Jake Johnson. Johnson threw all six innings, allowing just one earned run, while scattering eight hits on the day.
The Saints (14-8, 6-0 UMAC) got single runs in the first and third for the win, before Johnson shut them out for the final three frames.
Jordan Gegen followed Johnson with the Cougars second straight quality start on the day, keeping the powerful Saint offense off the board until the fifth inning.
The Cougars were unable to capitalize though, mustering just four hits while the Saints took advantage of three Morris errors.
The best team in the conference, the Saints stay unbeaten in UMAC play, but not until the Cougars made them work for it. With one game left to go in the series, Morris will try to get over the hump on Saturday, and take the next step they were unable to get today.
The series finale will start an hour earlier at 11:00 a.m., back at Wade Stadium in Duluth.
