Duluth, Minn. – After a pair of close losses yesterday, the Minnesota Morris baseball team saw the strength of St. Scholastica today (Apr. 7), as the host Saints capped the series sweep with a 19-4 win.
St. Scholastica (15-8, 7-0 UMAC) jumped out quickly, taking an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. But in the second they really took charge, opening up for eight runs on just seven hits. Morris (3-14, 3-4 UMAC) starter
Ted Gray couldn't make it out of the inning as 13 total batters made their way to the plate in the second.
The Saints added another five runs in the third, stepping out to a 15-0 lead after just three innings, while also seeing their third Cougar pitcher.
After being no-hit in the opener yesterday, the Cougars were held hitless for the first four innings today, with
Nick Perrotte finally breaking the streak in the top if the fifth with his single to center.
Also in the fifth, the Cougars broke out of a 26-inning scoreless streak, the dated back to the seventh inning of their win over Crown in the series finale last weekend. Perrotte's singlee scored
Eric Terres to put the Cougar on the board, with Perrrotte also coming home later in the inning for the Cougar's first two runs.
Morris added two more runs in the sixth while the Saint scoring barrage cooled to just four runs over the final four innings before the game ended with 19-4 final.
Perrotte continues to lead the team in hits, moving to 17 on the year, while also hitting safely for the fourth time in the last seven games.
The Cougars will take a break from UMAC play on Monday, as they look to snap out of their current four game losing streak. On Apr. 9, they will play a doubleheader with North Central in Minneapolis, with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
The two teams did not meet last season, and split their meeting in 2010 in Morris.
