Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris battled tough with Northland in game two but ended up being swept at Cougar field, falling 17-7 and 12-11 on the day. The big inning would haunt the Cougars in the both games as they were forced to play from behind. A late rally in game two left the Cougars just short of their third UMAC win of the season.
Northland scored in five of the six innings in game one as they took advantage of seven walks by Cougar pitchers. The Lumberjacks scored three times in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Morris responded and took the lead in the top of the third by scoring six runs.
Jason Hodson had a two run single and
Neil Arvold had a bases clearing double driving in three runs.
That lead did not last long as Northland quickly tied the game in the bottom of the third, scoring three times.
Eric Terres singled to lead off the fourth and scored on a one out ground out, giving the Cougars their lead back. Unfortunately, NC scored three more in the bottom of the fourth and did not look back. They put the game out of reach in the fifth scoring five runs, pushing the lead to 15-7. Two more runs in the sixth made it 17-7, which is where the game ended.
Morris struck first in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first. Two doubles surrounded an error as
Kylan Hill drove in both
Cody Reinke and
Jake Schmitz. The Northland bats were still hot after game one as they scored six runs in the first to take the lead. UMM did their best to keep the Lumberjacks within reach, scoring twice in the top of the second making it 6-4.
The Lumberjacks tried to pull away in the third as they plated four runners to make it 10-4. They would tack on another one in the bottom of the fourth as the lead grew to seven. Morris started to rally in the top of the sixth as back-to-back doubles by Hill and
Kyle Grote gave the Cougars some momentum. Grote would score on a groundout as the Cougars cut the lead to five.
Northland got a run in the bottom of the seventh, a run that would end up looming large. In the top of the eighth, Morris rallied as they would send ten batters to the plate and score five runs cutting the lead to just one. They would end up leaving runners on first and third coming up just short. They would rally with two outs in the ninth putting runners on first and second but a fielder's choice would end the threat and the game as UMM fell 12-11.
Minnesota Morris will take on Crown, Sunday in the season finale.
